Some employers are nervous about taking on people with a learning disability as they are not sure what to expect or how to act around someone with a learning disability. Internships and Work Experience offer a way to help break down barriers and help develop confidence in working with this client group.
The 'Get Set' Supported Internship Programme at Blackburn College recognises that having a job can make a huge difference to our students by offering life chances, helping with independence, building confidence, and starting new friendships.
We provide internships/work experience for students aged 18-24 with a learning difficulty/disability with local employers. Every student and employer has the support of an allocated Job Coach who will work alongside all parties to ensure that the young person performs to their best ability in an appropriate work setting to minimise any disruption.
Our aim is to achieve paid employment or continuing in meaningful voluntary activities for our interns at the end of the academic year.
